35 Tips to Make the Most of Your Trip
  1. Buy coffee or tea at a Mom & Pop Shop, they will cost much lower than a franchise name. You can even bring your own tea or coffee from home and make it in the hotel.
  2. Buy yogurt or granola bars for breakfast to eat in the hotel or on the go.
  3. Carry a reusable water bottle throughout the day. You can buy one and keep reusing it for a few days.
  4. Depending on the place you are and if the water is safe, fill up your water bottle in the hotel or bathroom sinks on the go.
  5. Travel by Metro to long distances.
  6. Rather than getting a later checkout time if you fly out late, ask to store your bag at the hotel. There is usually a designated room for guests to do this.
  7. Pack protein bars, apples or granola bars.
  8. Have bandaids in your wallet for blisters.
  9. Use ATMs when you can over an exchange kiosk since ATM is direct and the kiosk charges a fee.
  10. Carry hand sanitizer to avoid getting sick.
  11. Have a small pack of essentials like Tylenol, Halls and sunscreen in your toiletries.
  12. Go to the grocery store for picnic lunches. Cold meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables make a great picnic in a local park.
  13. When it comes to walking shoes- comfort is number one.
  14. Sunglasses are key.
  15. A few good hats to protect your face and save from doing your hair.
  16. Only bring mini shampoos and conditioners and try to limit the products and gadgets you bring. This is the same for makeup. Travelling is a good break for your hair and skin.
  17. If you are wearing a cross body purse, be sure to alternate your straps throughout the day so one shoulder doesn’t get stressed more than the others.
  18. When it comes to buying keepsakes, if it is something you not want as a gift, do not get it for someone else. The thought is nice, but instead of sending junk send them a nice message or picture when you’re there or meet for tea when you’re back. People care more about the thought than the gift.
  19. Taking pictures is great- but at the end of the day go through ones you don’t want anymore. If you’ll never look at it again when you get home, no need to keep it.
  20. Use a pedometer or the Health app on your phone. Travelling is a great way to get exercise without feeling like it and this may lead to increased motivation to continue when you get home.
  21. Pack headphones. They are great for a loud bus, plane or train and may help you fall asleep.
  22. When going somewhere with a large time difference, for the first few nights take melatonin to help you get to sleep and get your body on a set sleep cycle.
  23. Pack underwear and socks that are getting old- that way you can use them and then throw them out. This will save weight in your suitcase.
  24. If there is shoes, pajamas or clothes you don’t want anymore, pack and wear them on your trip and then leave them at the hotel when you are done. They can be donated or someone else can use them. This will lighten the load in case you shopped at need extra room. It’s also a great way to clean out your closet.
  25. Two good jackets is all you need. A warmer one for at night and a lighter one in the day.
  26. If you know it is a vacation with plenty of museums and walking, likely you’ll be wearing your runners the whole time. Unless you go to a really fancy place, you won’t need other pairs of shoes.
  27. Bring a bag that can hold enough of your stuff- water, snacks, wallet- but do not bring a bag that is large.
  28. Drink plenty of water in the morning at the hotel. Throughout the day you get busy so you want to be hydrated.
  29. When you see a washroom or are at a restaurant take advantage, sometimes they are few and far between.
  30. Start packing a couple days before and have things out that you may be wavering on. If you can go without it- do it.
  31. Wear your clothes multiple times.
  32. Pack clothes that you can mix and match. Sticking to black and white is always good.
  33. Do not travel with your best piece of jewelry. If you cannot imagine losing it, leave it at home.
  34. If you’re in a place known for pickpocketing, where your coat over top of your purse.
  35. Wear clothing and jewelry that is discrete and does not attract attention.
