A Sister I Never Knew About

When I was thirteen years old I was searching through my baby book. I enjoyed looking back on memories that I was too young to remember. As I was browsing, something strange caught my eye.

My birth certificate stated that my Mom had given birth to three children. This was very odd seeing as I only have one sister, Kelsey. Immediately I questioned my Mom about what was going on. She proceeded to tell me that the doctors must have just made a mistake on my certificate. I had this feeling like she was just not telling me the entire story, so I waited until she left the house, and I found my sisters birth certificate.

To my surprise, it said that my Mom had given birth to two children, but I would not have been born yet. The moment my parents got home, I demanded answers. They explained to my sister and I that when they were just seventeen years old, they had a baby girl and gave her up for adoption. Somewhere out in the world I had another full blood sister. I couldn’t wait to find her.

As soon as I could, I contacted the Regina Adoption Agency where my Mom and Dad had gone through the process of their adoption. They told me I would be put on a waiting list before they began the search for my sister. I waited, and I waited, and I waited. Eventually I thought the agency forgot about me, but I was too busy with my own life to start to the process back up again.

SIX YEARS LATER

Six years later I got an email from the Regina Adoption Agency. They told me that I was off the waiting list and that they will now start an active search for my sister. I was in shock, I believed they forgot about me, it had been six years.

The next day they called me back telling me that they had found her, and before they got in contact with her,  I needed to write a letter. So, I wrote a letter explaining that we were full biological sisters, and that our parents were still together. I told her where I lived, and about my family. I also sent photos of everybody, so she could see the similarities between her and all of us.

Eventually I got a letter and photo back. That was very emotional for all of us. We began talking frequently. I discovered that she had a family of her own, and that I was an auntie. We decided to all meet face to face Thanksgiving 2016. I cannot describe the feeling when I finally got to see my sister, hearing her voice, seeing her family. I am so thankful for all of them.
